Romance Was Born

I came across Romance Was Born last night - they are two designers from Australia and their designs are exactly the type of fashion I want to see when I google 'fashion' :) I'd wear tons of things from them.

“Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.” Jean Cocteau

“What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.” Miuccia Prada

“Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful.” Sophia Loren

Bob Dylan Gets Pissed Off, Questions Your Motives and Transcends Time

I was watching some Bob Dylan interviews on YouTube last night and this one is pretty hardcore. He's talking to Time Magazine in 1965. In general Dylan didn't make it easy for the journalists. In one video he mumbles and deflects the questions, saying "I can't tell you that, because I'm not God, am I?" and then sketches a caricature of his interviewer. The following is from a 1966 Playboy Magazine interview.

PLAYBOY: Don't you think the things one learns in college can help enrich one's life?

DYLAN: I don't think anything like that is going to enrich my life, no - not my life, anyway. Things are going to happen whether I know why they happen or not. It just gets more complicated when you stick yourself into it. You don't find out why things move. You let them move; you watch them move; you stop them from moving: you start them moving. But you don't sit around and try to figure out why there's movement - unless, of course, you're just an innocent moron, or some wise old Japanese man. Out of all the people who just lay around and ask "Why?", how many do you figure really want to know?

PLAYBOY: Are you concerned, as you approach 30, that you may begin to "go square," lose some of your openness to experience, become leery of change and new experiment?

DYLAN: No. But if it happens, then it happens. What can I say? There doesn't seem to be any tomorrow. Every time I wake up, no matter in what position, it's always been today. To look ahead and start worrying about trivial little things I can't really say has any more importance than looking back and remembering trivial little things. I'm not going to become any poetry instructor at any girls' school; I know that for sure. But that's about all I know for sure. I'll just keep doing these different things, I guess.

PLAYBOY: Such as?

DYLAN: Waking up in different positions.

PLAYBOY: One final question: Even though you've more or less retired from political and social protest, can you conceive of any circumstance that might persuade you to reinvolve yourself?

DYLAN: No, not unless all the people in the world disappeared.

Alcest Esthetics

Alcest are from France. They began as a black metal band but now their music is described as shoegazing and dream pop. It's very beautiful, poetic, dark, hopeful, atmospheric, did I say beautiful... I love their esthetics too, all their album covers and images. Neige, the singer and founder of Alcest, says their music has a lot of innocence, lot of depth, lot of hope.

Une prière lointaine que porte le vent du soir
Anime les feuilles dans leur danse alanguie.
C'est le chant des vieux arbres entonné pour toi,
Pour ces bois obscurs maintenant endormis.
Sans nous attendre tant de saisons ont passé;
Les feuilles dorées s'en allant mourir à terre
Renaîtront un jour sous un ciel radieux,
Mais notre monde érodé restera le même
Et demain toi et moi serons partis.

A distant prayer, carried by the evening wind
Enlivens leaves in their languid dance.
Hear the song of the old trees, singing for you
For the dark, resting woods.
So many seasons have passed; they did not wait.
The golden leaves dying on the ground
Will be reborn under bright skies
As this weatherworn world remains the same,
And tomorrow, you and I will be gone.

"Maybe you know it, it's about personal experience I had when I was a child and a kind of esoteric experience that haunt me for all my life and that is still inside me. It's not so strong nowadays because I'm older and things change but it's changed my way to see life so much that I wanted to make a band about it." Neige in interview

Memories From Another World

Where I'm from, time doesn't exist
Seconds turn into hours,
Years are made of short moments that have already flown away
And our deceptive words are replaced
By music and the colours
That drift like perfumes in the amber air
"Don't be afraid, it's all gone now
Break the chains of your mortal fears
To be forever free
And find back the past tranquility.
Don't be afraid, it's all gone now
Let your tears flow one last time
To be forever free
And go back to the world you come from."

Flower Mandala Nature Magick

I found something beautiful this morning -- made by Danmala -- flower mandalas! And some quotes that resonate with me today :)

"Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience." Ralph Waldo Emerson

"I believe that there is a subtle magnetism in Nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright." Henry David Thoreau

"Adventure is worthwhile." Aesop

"Forgiveness is . . . accepting God's sovereign use of people and situations to strip you of self importance, and humiliate your self love." Martha Kilpatrick

“Fear less, hope more; Eat less, chew more; Whine less, breathe more; Talk less, say more; Love more, and all good things will be yours.” Swedish proverb

“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” C. G. Jung

"It is never too late to give up your prejudices." Henry David Thoreau

“Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness.” Oprah Winfrey

"A man should never be ashamed to own that he has been in the wrong, which is but saying... that he is wiser today than yesterday." Jonathan Swift

“People deal too much with the negative, with what is wrong...Why not try and see positive things, to just touch those things and make them bloom?” Thich Nhat Hanh

“I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.” William Allen White

Virpominen :: Witch Easter Tradition

In Finland, kids celebrate Easter by dressing up as witches and going door to door Sunday morning "trick or treating". But there's no 'tricking' - they prepare the day before by decorating willow branches with colorful tissue paper, candy wrappers, ribbons and feathers and recite a rhyme at each door while waving a branch. The rhyme basically states that "I'm waving this for your health and for a good year, branch for you, salary for me". The salary meaning: CANDY! CHOCOLATE EGGS! COINS! CANDY! - traded for a pretty branch. This whole activity is called 'virpominen'.

I did that every year with my sisters and friends as a kid. Here's my sisters Minna and Kaisu and me. Yes it's snows in April.

Yes, Kaisu did her own make up for her witchy look. We visited our grandparents that day and Kaisu told them immediately that "Don't be afraid - it's just me, Kaisu!" She's so cute. OMG.

Nostalgic as I am, I'm wearing witchy clothes today. Here's my friend James ghosting it up in the pic, taken at work :) See, I have my willow branch too! Kinda sorta!

Here's some unrelated quotes I came across recently that I think are great:

"Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone." John Maynard Keynes

“Women are meant to be loved, not to be understood.” Oscar Wilde

"America makes prodigious mistakes, America has colossal faults, but one thing cannot be denied: America is always on the move. She may be going to Hell, of course, but at least she isn't standing still."  e. e. cummings

"I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." Edgar Allan Poe

"Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul." Mark Twain

Have a fabulous week!
